Whistler Olympic Park
More than a third of the medals awarded at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Winter Games were won at Whistler Olympic Park, a massive facility built to stage the Nordic ski disciplines of cross-country skiing, ski-jumping, and biathlon. But even though the cameras have left and the athletes have returned to their homes or ice-cube trays, this world-class sports venue stills hums with nimble ski jumpers and eagle-eyed biathletes. The latter have a particularly impressive home, centered on a 6,000-square-foot technical building. During introductory lessons and sports development programs, they don cross-country skis to loop around 4 kilometres of competition trails, and take aim at fully electronic targets inside a 30-lane shooting range with adjacent penalty loop.
