Sight, the workhorse of the five senses, puts in too many hours keeping man from falling in manholes. Reward the most overworked sense with today's Groupon: for $50, you get an individual Curate Your Own Membership with two series (a $125 value), or for $75, you get a dual-level Curate Your Own Membership with two series (a $165 value) at the Whitney Museum of American Art—a cutting-edge home of the arts located on Madison and 75th on the Upper East Side. You must redeem your Groupon to begin your membership within two months of today's date.

The Whitney's Curate Your Own Membership program is an innovative new approach to museum membership, allowing members-to-be to choose their own customized package of benefits. Each member gets a set of core benefits that include unlimited free admission, exclusive exhibition access, discounts, and more. From there, Whitney members can curate their own gallery of perks, choosing from a series of add-ons—the Social, Insider, Learning, Family, or Philanthropy series. Basic memberships include one series add-on, but this deal includes two series add-ons with either option.

Choose “Social” to rub elbows with artists, members, and sculptures at opening cocktail receptions, or “Insider” to get a behind-the-scenes tour of Modern Life: Edward Hopper and His Time with the exhibition’s co-curator. “Learning” gets you invitations to lectures and gallery talks, as well as educational packets about major exhibitions, while "Family” caters to kids, offering free admission to family programs and a kids' passport that's stamped on each visit. The "Philanthropy" option allows patrons to generously donate more of their membership's monetary value to supporting the museum. See a full listing of all the Curate Your Own Membership series benefits here.

Core membership benefits include:

  • Unlimited free admission for each member
  • Members-only viewing hours
  • First access to major exhibitions
  • Members-only express coat-check line
  • Discounts at participating neighborhood stores and restaurants (including 20% off in-store purchases at Gap)
  • Up to 25% off at the museum store during member shopping week December 15 - 19, 2010
  • Free admission for two to other museums in the Reciprocal Membership Program

In addition to core benefits, members also get perks such as preview days, early-morning views with a complimentary continental breakfast, and Member Saturday Nights (featuring live jazz and a cash bar)—where members can enjoy after-hours tours of exhibitions such as Modern Life, which traces American realism as it develops between 1900 and 1940, highlighting the work of the iconic Hopper and his contemporaries with around 80 pieces in a range of media. And, of course, members can revel in unlimited admission to the Whitney and its collection of more than 18,000 works by artists including Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, and Georgia O’Keeffe. The Whitney elucidates the rich contexts and varied movements of 20th- and 21st-century American art, in addition to offering access to rotating exhibitions and a huge range of programs and events.

Please note that email and shipping info will be required at checkout and sent to the Whitney Museum to aid in redemption, but the membership will not be activated until the required information listed on the Groupon voucher has been submitted (which must be done by 2/8/11).

Taking the train from Milwaukee to Union station makes it an easy day trip. Art Institute is a quick walk from the train.

Art Institute of Chicago is absolutely a beautiful place to visit. It has a great combination of contemporary arts and classical arts in its exhibition all year around. Shopping experience is great, plenty of unique and artistic items to consider.
