Wild Turkey Distillery

Wild Turkey Distillery's history dates back to 1869, when the Ripy brothers opened a humble bourbon distillery on Wild Turkey Hill in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. Their take on charred oak barrel-aged bourbon gradually gained popularity, before skyrocketing to prominence thanks to an appearance at Chicago's World Fair in 1893. After nearly a century and a half, Wild Turkey has become a household name.

Today, legendary master distiller Jimmy Russell helms the operation. Tracing a direct lineage to the founders, he learned his trade from the son of one of the original Ripy brothers. And for the last 60 years, he's handcrafted the bourbon and rye, earning recognition as the longest-tenured master distiller in America. Read on to learn how Jimmy continues to carry the Wild Turkey torch:

  • True Kentucky straight bourbon: The bourbon achieves its austere taste with a signature grain mixture and limestone-filtered water straight from the Kentucky River. It spends the next two years maturing in American white oak barrels.
  • What gives it the deep auburn color? They barrel the bourbon at a lower proof, which allows them to add less water while bottling it, resulting in a richer flavor that is darker in color than other bourbons.
  • Notable awards: Both the bourbon and rye are regularly ranked Highly Recommended by the Beverage Tasting Institute and consistently snatch up medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
  • See for yourself: The staff leads tours of the distillery and the award-winning visitor center. The modernist interpretation of an old Kentucky tobacco barn even houses the original copper still from the first Wild Turkey distillery. The mostly glass structure delivers unimpeded views of the Kentucky River, giving whiskey pilgrims a chance to sip bourbon and rye while looking out onto the source of its main ingredient.

Customer Reviews

WE had a great time. The visitors center is architecturally interesting, the tour was very informative, and the tasting was, well, most enjoyable. Highly recommended.
