Unlike snowmobiles, sled dogs exhibit loyalty, don’t require gas, and allow their riders to silently sneak up on sleeping yetis. Partake in pooch-fueled feats with today’s Groupon: for $17, you get one admission to the WildRide Sled Dog Rodeo, presented by Seavey's Ididaride and performed daily on Ship Creek Avenue in Anchorage (a $35 value; admission for children ages 2–11 is $15).
WildRide Sled Dog Rodeos pay homage to Alaska’s furriest and most distinctive athletes with an evening of music, laughs, and incredible exploits. Boasting a line-up of Iditarod and Yukon Quest champions both human and canine, rodeos pit sled teams against each other in races, test lead-dog training with voice-command obstacle courses, and shame local strongmen as a 16-dog team pulls a 10,000-pound truck from a standstill. After the competition, the young and young at heart can snap a photo with adorable husky puppies and meet Hugo, one of the four-legged stars of Disney’s Snow Buddies. Shows run rain or shine, with rodeo viewers safely ensconced in comfortable covered bleachers that protect attendees from the elements like stadium-sized mukluks.
The one-hour shows start daily at 7 p.m., with 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. matinees scheduled on July 5 and 19; August 2, 16, and 30; and September 6 and 20. For $25, Groupon buyers can upgrade to an Iditarod Dinner Show, which treats bipedal guests to generous portions of New York strip steak, roasted chicken breast, veggies, and fresh-brewed coffee. Attendees will also get the chance to converse with experienced mushers, each boasting tales of adventure and being led off course by the smell of steak.
