$179 for a Bed-and-Breakfast Package for Two ($299 Value)

  • Five-course dinner on a moving train
  • Overnight stay in a two-bed room in a sleeper car
  • Complimentary hors d'oeuvres
  • Four drink tokens for the cash bar
  • Hot breakfast

After arriving at the station between 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., couples drop overnight gear in their two-bed, 1950s sleeper-car room and head to the private lounge to nibble hors d'oeuvres and sip a complimentary cocktail. Once all passengers are aboard, the train pulls away from the station, slipping into the beautiful solitude of the Northwoods for its three-hour circuit. While chugging along tracks laid down in the 19th century, guests dig into a five-course dinner, starting with a fresh salad and an appetizer of Wisconsin cheese. Soup warms stomachs before four entree options cater to vegetarians and carnivores alike, with rotating selections such as shrimp scampi, flatiron steak, and grilled salmon. After the main course, diners can tackle the dessert or temporarily defer the sugary finish for a before-bed treat.

The 1918 dining car remains open after guests finish their feasts, encouraging long conversations. Farther down, a dance car lets hoofers show off their moves to classics from the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s while the lounge serves up tasty cocktails. Once the train returns to the station, guests can take in the sights of downtown Spooner or repair to their rooms for some shuteye. Hot breakfast the next morning tops off the excursions.

The Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad whisks passengers away on food-filled excursions through the scenic forests surrounding Spooner. A lineup of vintage train cars ensconces guests in antique luxury, starting with the dining car that plays host to elegant five-course dinners, leisurely brunches, and kid-friendly pizza feasts. Overnight guests sidle into the retro comfort of the 1950s sleeper car's double-decker single beds and individual climate controls. Those seeking deluxe accommodations can book a 1914 private car, complete with such railway luxuries as a full-size bed, private washrooms with showers, and emergency speakers set to play flapper-repelling waltzes. A lounge with a full bar accompanies most trips, lubricating pleasant conversation as each trip wends its way past quaint towns, shimmering streams, and towering trees.

Our train ride was wonderful! The staff was friendly and accommodating, the food was tasty and very satisfying, the ride was nice and weather great! Just wish the ride could have been longer. A definite unique experience to be enjoyed with a special person!

This was a fun adventure! The staff were really nice, the food was very good, the drinks were very reasonably priced. Only thing is that the rooms and room bathroom were very small - fine if you are average size, but if you are tall, be sure to upgrade to first class or, if you are up for an adventure, stay in the regular size rooms - definitely good for a laugh! One other thing, it would have been nice to have a real fire when we returned for the evening - because it was a bit later in the year, it was kinda chilly and the little gas fireplace - although it looked cool - didn't give of any heat, so it was silly to sit around it...

A very fun adventure! The food was good, service was friendly, drinks were inexpensive, and we met some great new people. The overnight rooms are tiny, with VERY thin walls, but the beds are comfortable, and each room has a small private toilet (and there is a shower room down the hall). The train didn't leave the station until about 6:10, and it got dark soon after that, so it was hard to see much scenery. If I ever do it again, it will be in summer so that it stays light longer and we can see more. The train ride is about 3 hours long - they go about 7 miles out and 7 miles back in reverse, and then park back at the "depot" overnight.
