Early man's attempts at flying included sewing feathers onto his arms and scaling mountain peaks in order to cling to the underbellies of passing comets. Learn to fly the new-fashioned way with today's Groupon: for $55, you get a discovery flight lesson at WNC Aviation in Fletcher (a $99 value).
WNC Aviation's full-time professional flight instructors lead discovery flights, which take prospective aviators to the cloud kingdom to show the thrill and ease of flying a plane. The flight kicks off with a debriefing session at the Asheville Regional Airport's Lacey Griffin Aviation Center, where you can absorb information about WNC's private pilot training. After re-briefing and discussing the itinerary, guests and the pilot will perform a preflight inspection of the Cessna Skyhawk SP to make sure the tires are inflated, wings are secure, and decals have fresh fingerpaint.
Once co-pilots mount their air chariot, the instructor will start the engine, execute final pre-takeoff procedures, and lead the steel beast into the sky. Similar to attaching a webcam to a migratory turkey vulture, the discovery flight will head 5,000 feet in the air to present views of WNC's practice areas over Brevard and scenery east of Hendersonville. After executing a series of gentle turns and maneuvers with the help of an instructor, pilots-in-training will head back to the ground and taxi the plane to its starting area. The entire experience from engine startup to shutdown is approximately 30 minutes long.
The flight school is open seven days a week and houses a full-motion flight simulator, complete with G-forces and pilot-to-pilot high-fives. For those interested in making a career out of flying, WNC Aviation also offers career flight training services.
The full-time professional flight instructors of WNC Aviation help aspiring aeronauts unfurl their wings and also refresh professional pilots on essential flying skills with a personal and career-training curriculum. Crews let experienced aviators take to the skies in an aircraft from the fully insured fleet, or teach beginners flight basics within a private or small-group setting. A full-motion simulator allows captains to perfect their “fasten your seatbelt” speeches, and an FAA-certified training program runs through the entire certification process under real-world conditions at the school’s controlled, uncongested airport.
