Untrained woodworkers produce heartfelt yet flawed projects such as lopsided picture frames, charred bookends, and single-use park benches. Upgrade your labors of love with today's Groupon: for $45, you get enrollment in one class at the Woodworkers Club, located in Rockville (up to a $90 value). Choose from four classes: introduction to pen making, table saw techniques, router table techniques, and band saw techniques.
The Woodworkers Club strengthens craftsmanship and hones technical skills with an assemblage of wood-shop classes for weekend whittlers and seasoned jigsawers. Construct exotic wood pens and pencils while utilizing the lathe, band saw, drill press, and sanding station in the introduction-to-pen-making course. Learn how to treat table saws with the utmost respect in the table saw-techniques class or study shape-shifting blades in the router table-techniques course while constructing a box with an inlay for holding change, spare keys, or unused “I Like Ike” buttons. Unlike hot-glue-gunned Tupperware, the solid wood box constructed in the band saw-techniques class will be completely cut from a band saw and ready for at-home assembly after the course. Each three-hour class is limited to six students and one experienced wood whisperer, with all tools and materials provided.
The club’s 3,000-square-foot lumber haven houses a robust range of equipment as well as a public retail shop where building enthusiasts can peruse an assortment of project pieces, including exotic woods, power tools, and pneumatic-splinter removers. Call ahead for reservations.
