What You'll Get
Most people know better than to judge a book by its cover, but that hasn’t stopped publishers from plastering shirtless vampires all over underselling copies of the Farmers' Almanac. Stock up on eye-catching titles with today’s Groupon: for $10, you get two adult weekend passes to the Wordstock Book Fair at the Oregon Convention Center. The tickets grant holders admission to the fair on October 8–9 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free for children 13 and younger.
Woodstock’s dozens of literary exhibitors and more than 100 participating authors shine a spotlight on contemporary American fiction and raise funds to benefit public-school writing programs. Sidescroll through aisles to encounter such text-wielding exhibitors as Hellboy publisher Dark Horse Comics and the literary journal McSweeney’s or head to a workshop on essential story structure (Sunday, 3 p.m.) to deconstruct fiction-making basics, hone sharper stories, and construct more elaborate, satirical Twitters.
The weekend’s more than 50 literary scheduled events include a Q & A with fantasy fixture Ursula K. Le Guin and poet Emily Warn (Sunday, 2 p.m.) and an interview with The English Patient author Michael Ondaatje (Saturday, 2 p.m.). Wordstock’s proceeds benefit programs established to further literary education in school settings, including a Wordstock for Kids program that outfits Portland Public Schools with creative-writing instruction and authorly tweed jackets.
