The Deal

  • $65 for a basic introductory sewing class ($150 value)

Students learn sewing basics on high-speed, computerized SINGER machines, working towards the creation of a stylish tote bag made with high-quality denim, hardware on the straps, and a two-tone color block. Instructors cover skills such as threading the machine, sewing through multiple layers of fabric, and how to join seams, among many others. All supplies, including the pattern, fabric, and hardware, are included. See the class schedule here.

When WORKROOM SOCIAL founder Jennifer Wiese looks at a piece of fabric, she sees potential. She might easily transform a yard of cotton into a summer dress, or a measure of wool into a pair of custom-fitted slacks. At her well-equipped Brooklyn sewing studio, Wiese, pictured here working her magic on a SINGER Quantum Stylist Touch 9985 sewing machine, and her team of friendly instructors help students take the creation process into their own hands.

The studio hosts workshops for students of every experience level, from first-time sewers to experienced seamstresses who can thread their needles through telekinesis. Instructors teach sewing basics as well as specific skills such as installing zippers or creating custom pockets. While honing these skills, students can enjoy perks such as snacks from Brooklyn-based merchants. Day-long workshops even include a locally catered lunch and a cocktail hour.
