Students of all fitness levels can take classes in brazilian jujitsu, a martial art that mixes elements of judo and wrestling, and muay thai, or “thai boxing,” a competitive contact sport. Despite the fact that Workshop New York devotes much of its 4,000 square feet of space to the martial arts of brazilian jujitsu and muay thai boxing, the gym is not all about combat. Black belts Aaron Milam and Jin Yung know that some of their students want to fight competitively, while others are just in the mood for fitness. That's why they adapt brazilian jujitsu's sparring and wrestling techniques to create full-body workouts for students of all levels. During muay thai boxing classes, students don boxing gloves or intimidating foam fingers to engage in kicks, punches, and knee strikes designed to build stamina and confidence. Also open to students of all fitness levels, the center's basic strength-and-conditioning classes eschew machines in favor of classic lifting and plyometric exercises.
