Much like the New Deal, free refills, and ownership of the moon, baseball helped make America the great nation it is today. Salute our national pastime with today’s Groupon: for $22, you get four half-hour Diamond Athlete Academy skills clinics (a $7 value each) and 12 batting-cage tokens (a $2 value/round of 20 pitches) at Fresno World of Baseball (a $52 total value).
Fresno World of Baseball’s roster of professional sluggers teaches classes to greenhorn sluggers in the Diamond Athlete Academy. Fielders gather on astroturf in the indoor hitting zone to practice diving at grounders, nabbing pop flies, and hurling balls around the bases, whereas catchers and pitchers congregate separately in the two-mound bullpen to practice spitting on the ground and barking like a dog.
During batting-cage rounds, hitters crack bats on a horde of 20 baseballs and softballs, and pintsize players as young as 3 can wallop wiffle balls. Outfitted with bats, helmets, and rookie cards hastily constructed from an automotive air freshener, patrons fasten cleats 42 feet from the motorized ball lobbers, locking eyes with spheres that range from 40 to 70 miles per hour. Guests can tote along their own baseball tackle if they like, spreading their slugging out across several visits or numerous bats enchanted by the spirits of bygone sluggers.
