Knitting circles were once a popular place to exchange rumors about the area's handsomest fireman, which of the neighboring towns' mayors were secretly left-handed, and the fate of the Crumb brothers. Get your finger on the pulse and some yarn with today's Groupon: for $45, you get a series of three 90-minute Learn to Knit or Learn to Crochet classes at Wynona Studios in Oregon City (a $90 value). Required supplies, including needles, hooks, and yarn, are included with each series.
From their historic commercial building downtown, the teachers at Wynona Studios lead a series of classes, in yarn manipulation using local and recycled fibers delivered directly to the studio by the people who made them. Learn to Knit students each create a washcloth during the first session using the bare basics, such as casting on, knit and purl stitches, binding off, and untangling film noir plot lines. During the second session, needle navigators learn to work in the round by creating hats for soft-boiled eggs or pet golf balls. Round three sees students continuing their sampler scarf homework and asking lingering questions about their new skills or newfound ability to communicate with fibers.
The first class in the Learn to Crochet series introduces pupils to initial skills, such as chaining, fashioning straight edges, and single and double crochets. Second-session students delve into more advanced stitch techniques before receiving their sampler scarf take-home projects. During the third meeting, the intrepid instructor guides completion of the scarf and assigns crocheting pen pals.
Deep overstuffed chairs, antique seating, and cozy throws envelop hook handlers and needle nerds as they work. Hanging projects and skeins of yarn leaning against the rustic, wood-beamed wall whisper project ideas to crafting circles as they create.
