Art can express a variety of human feelings, from joy at the birth of a child to confusion at the birth of a man-child. Eloquently articulate your emotions with today's Groupon: for $15, you get $30 worth of classes at Xpressive Arts Center in Poway.
Inside a historic Poway sanctuary, registered art therapist Bonnie Stromer tests creative limits of children, teens, and adults through a variety of intimately sized classes and workshops. The art center's calendar of rotating courses includes sessions in painting, drawing, and jewelry making. Basic drawing for kids arms 5- to 12-year-olds with colored utensils and a knowledge of shading, shaping, and coloring ($25 per session). Jessica Johnson challenges teens during a two-hour class of angst-relieving art, where she highlights composition, scale, and perspective in realistic and abstract realms ($35 per session). Adults can get better acquainted with acrylics during two-hour painting classes, which allow artists to openly use canvas for something other than packing raw meat ($35 per class).
In addition to its basic courses, the center boasts hands-on arts and crafts classes, including Just Let Me Bead, where all ages learn to craft bracelets, necklaces, birth certificates, and key chains ($20 per session). A two-day mask-making workshop brings fantastic faces to life with feathers, beads, paint, and papier-mâché ($50 per session). Most classes include supplies.

Xpressive Arts Center
Bonnie Stromer, a registered art therapist, opened Xpressive Arts Center to make art programs available for everyone in the community, animating her belief that the arts are an important form of self-expression and communication. Inside the historic stone building, instructors lead an array of classes in printmaking, beadwork, and painting to stoke the flames of each individual’s artistic expressivity. During the popular BYOB painting sessions, groups of painters bond and learn new techniques over wine, beer, or basically any kind of matter that starts with the letter b.
