Sailing courses conducted in the slip introduce beginners to the rigors of sailing, explore safety rules, and explain vernacular from the bow to the stern, all without a need for a life preserver. The group of 12–14 students can begin its lessons with a tour of the yacht and ask questions about its operation. Each participant will also receive a take-home booklet of the sailing vernacular they heard, with everything from bollard to baggy wrinkle.<p>
Yacht Sylvia Sailing
Yacht Sylvia is a 56-foot, 35-ton staysail ketch designed in New Zealand by naval architect John Alden. Launched in 1973, the yacht has circumnavigated the globe on multiple occasions, survived hurricanes, and now ferries passengers and students to remote destinations. The below-deck interior features a maritime museum with artifacts from around the world displayed on the bulkhead and countertops. Sailing lessons range from two-hour tours and explanations of basic sailing techniques to three-week immersive trips abroad during which participants learn as they perform crew duties. In addition, Yacht Sylvia Sailing can host charters for up to six to international destinations including the Channel Islands and the Sea of Cortez.

“Bob was very friendly, interesting and a wealth of walking, talking sailing knowledge and adventures. I had a wonderful time learning from him and conversing with him and his mother (who made me tea) aboard Sylvia. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience and I look forward to getting invited to a day sailing trip soon! -Jen”
“It was a great experience to have the instuctional part of sailing on an actual yacht rather than classroom and blackboard.”
