"Yamas" is a Greek word that means "to our health." The owners of the restaurant Yamas took that both as their eatery's name and its philosophy. They prepare handmade lamb and beef gyros, rotisserie chicken marinated in lemon and mediterranean spices, and hearty burgers all made from naturally-raised, antibiotic-free meats. All of the healthy build-your-own rice bowls, pitas, wraps, and salads are made from freshly-cooked, non-processed food, with ingredients based on the Mediterranean diet. Even the veggies are locally sourced and organic whenever possible. But the overall goal is to bring the culinary traditions of Greece to life in DC, and, according to customers, they do a pretty good job. They opened their second location in the 16th Street corridor of DC as a fast casual version of the original, and their original location won City Paper's Best New Restaurant 2011, an award chosen by readers whose passion for Greek food is matched only by Zeus's secret love of tacos.
