The 90-minute foot-powered exploration of Ybor City begins as tour takers rendezvous with their guide at the 7th Avenue statue of Vicente Martinez-Ybor. Once assembled, the small group proceeds through the notable streets as guide Lonnie Herman reveals the colorful stories behind the diverse Ybor neighborhoods that were once only swampland. Historical information includes the account of how the city’s founders established a Cuban-owned locality on U.S. soil, the rise and dominance of local mafia figures, and the finer points of a Cuban game known as bolita. For information on the tour scheduling and other questions, view the FAQ here. The tour costs $5 for children aged 6–12 and is free for children 5 and younger.

Ybor City Historic Walking Tours

Tampa resident and history lover Lonnie Herman’s longtime fascination with history has evolved into a broad expertise about the area's vibrant streets where newspapers are printed in three languages. The personable former executive also has the gift of being an evocative storyteller. This convergence of interest and talents resulted in Lonnie's company, Ybor City Historic Walking Tours. The guides' upbeat narration carry small groups down vibrant 7th Avenue with detailed anecdotes that reveal the complex past behind Ybor City's cigar factories, Columbia Restaurant, and the story of the eponymous Vicente Martinez-Ybor, who founded the city as a place to store his statues of himself.

Customer Reviews

The tour guide was very knowledgable and entertaining. It was fun to learn about the area since I'm not originally from Tampa.
