Intricately hand-woven, colorful hammocks created by skilled weavers from a Mlabri village in Thailand
In a remote village in northern Thailand, the Mlabri people have endured many hardships, from destructive slash-and-burn farming to malaria outbreaks. When Joe Demin visited Thailand and witnessed firsthand the intricate weaving and beautiful colors that went into making the village’s sustainable hammocks, he was inspired to create Yellow Leaf Hammocks, an enterprise designed to help the Mlabri weavers bring long-term social and economic change to their village.

Each handcrafted hammock features up to 150,000 interwoven loops and can support up to 550 pounds. The quick-drying yarn can be left outdoors without fading or molding. Packaged in portable tote bags made from repurposed parachute fabric, each hammock comes with a postcard relating the story of the weaver who made it.
Yellow Leaf Hammocks currently works with 100 weavers as part of its commitment to generating a positive impact on four different levels—economic, environmental, social, and cultural. Whereas a family of five Mlabri field laborers might earn fewer than 300 baht ($10) in a month, a weaver can make enough money to comfortably support her family for the same amount of time by creating just one hammock. What’s more, weaving jobs help prevent forest destruction by removing people from slash-and-burn farming enterprises, and a stable income from weaving enables children to attend school rather than work the fields.
Through their partnership with Kiva, Yellow Leaf Hammocks also provides effective microfinance solutions to help artisans have secure work and gain financial independence.
