In Sanskrit, “yoga” stands for “union” because it aims to unite the body, mind, and breath. The asanas were at first rejected by some of the Indian yogis as they considered the postures distraction from meditation. In the 1920s a system called “Primitive Gymnastics” became popular in India and mixed with older yoga traditions. At the same time some teachers traveled through the country, teaching strengthening and combat techniques disguised as yoga. This is how what is now known as yoga in Western countries was created. This form of exercise is adaptable and therefore suitable for pregnant women and older students.
