Owner, trainer, and seasoned horsewoman Kristen Paster helms a staff of experienced instructors that enlightens equestrians of all ages and experience levels at Yorktown Stables’ scenic farm. Surrounded by 100 acres of open pasture, the staff tutors students in both the English and Western styles atop trained steeds that are specially paired with riders based on experience, size, and opinions about carrot farming subsidies. Pupils glean both mounted techniques as well as horse care, learning to properly lead, groom, and tack their four-legged companions.
Alternatively, couples embark on weekend guided trail rides that meander along the glittering Poquoson River. After a 15-minute introduction to their horse with an overview of riding basics, groups of approximately four riders embark on excursions to trot amid open plains, through thick, wooded areas, and over native species of barrel jump.
At Yorktown Stables, more than a dozen horses can often be found traipsing down trails that wind through acres of pastures and woods nestled alongside the Poquoson River. Helmed by seasoned equestrian Kristen Paster, the stables' staff teaches aspiring riders to bond with these same steeds during lessons in Western, English, and saddleseat riding. This healthy and diverse stable of horses accommodates riders of all levels, whether they’re children or adults, hobbyists or competitors, or humans or sentient saddles.
