A subsidiary program of YouthLaunch, Urban Roots engages young city-dwellers in a character-building program oriented toward growing sustainably farmed produce, simultaneously cultivating farming and business skills, and increasing the Austin area's access to healthy, naturally grown vegetables. By participating in the program, young people learn the value of meaningful work and gain a firm understanding of proper eating habits and healthy cooking.
The Urban Roots program places active youth ages 14 to 17 in the role of paid "farm interns," in which they are responsible for the bounty of a 3.5-acre farm in East Austin. Sixty percent of the farm interns' sustainably grown harvests is sold at farmers' markets and farm stands—with all proceeds reinvested into the program—and the remaining 40% is donated to local hunger-relief programs. Though produce and prices vary depending on the season and other market prices, green-thumbed growers typically have fresh carrots ($3.50/bundle), radishes ($2.50), collard greens ($3/bundle), okra ($4/pound), spinach ($8/pound), basil/dill ($3/bundle), and much more.
Urban Roots actively participates in Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), which provides the program with reliable funding and supplies dedicated veggie devourers with a regular source of locally and sustainably grown edibles. The program's CSA initiative provides donors with 17 weeks of fresh-from-the-farm produce, which is delivered in a cloth bag to the Austin Triangle Farmers' Market each Wednesday. Deliveries begin in April and run through mid-July.
Join G-Team and help Urban Roots enrich the lives of Austin-area youth via the power of urban farming. Those who donate $10 will receive $12 worth of fresh, sustainably grown produce. G-Team members who donate $343 will take their first step toward enrollment in Urban Roots' 17-week CSA produce-delivery program; this investment requires a second payment of $342, including a $5 bag fee (a total contribution of $685)—though, because of the nature of the donation, $170 is tax-deductable. All of the proceeds directly support the initiatives of YouthLaunch's Urban Roots program, helping it continue to touch the lives of young people and nourish the community.
In addition to today's deal, Urban Roots invites G-Team members and the general public to attend the "Music by the Slice" event held March 17–19 at Home Slice Pizza on South Congress Avenue. The free event, a SXSW fundraiser, features more than 30 bands, with proceeds from bar sales benefiting Urban Roots.
Unlike traditional Groupon deals, G-Team campaigns typically don't offer you a "discount" or "savings." So "buyer" beware—when you click "Buy" to donate your time or money to a worthwhile G-Team cause, the only discount you may receive is 100% off free, priceless karma. Read more about G-Team.
