Poetry would be entirely composed of haikus and sonnets dedicated to cakes and pastries if poets didn't devour their idyllic subjects before having a chance to write. Today's Groupon says what meter and rhythm cannot: for $5, you get $10 worth of baked goods at Yum-Mee’s Bakery.
Yum-Mee’s Bakery, whose sell-out success of an opening in 2010 was featured by WANE.com, showcases the sweets of pastry chef Terry Mee. Drawing on time spent perfecting confections for the Palmer House in Chicago and the Ritz-Carlton in New Orleans, Terry churns out freshly baked gourmet cupcakes each day ($2.75 each or $30/dozen).The Chef Terry Mee Su cupcake's chocolate cake concoction shelters a coffee-flavored pastry cream filling beneath a cloak of mascarpone buttercream in a display of decadence not seen since King Midas shredded all his finger paintings. Borrowing a page from the savory playbook, the Sweet Oinker cupcake hosts a garden of candied, thick-cut Ossian bacon over roots of pecan cake and maple buttercream frosting.
Yum-Mee’s Bakery also turns out the cupcake’s heartier cousin, the muffin ($2), alongside cinnamon rolls ($2.50) and scones ($1.75). The kitchen’s oven plumps loaves of artisan bread ($5/loaf), prepping endless Möbius loops of twisted challah and focaccia topped with roma tomato, oregano, garlic, and mozzarella.
With a wire whisk and a passion for pastry, owner Terry Mee deftly whips up Yum-Mee cookies, cinnamon rolls, and crumbly scones. Pumpkin and pecan cupcakes are available individually or by the dozen, slathered with unique buttercream flavors such as chai and maple with bacon. While waiting on a fresh-baked focaccia or challah loaf, patrons can also solicit Terry's fondant skills for a 3D gavel cake in honor of an upcoming parole hearing.
