Discovered in 1953, pizza is the only food to have been eaten on the moon, blessed by a pope, and endorsed by Olympic marathoner Gezahegne Abera—the "triple crown" of food honors. With today's Groupon, $10 gets you $20 worth of dine-in or carryout pies at one of zpizza's two locations in Raleigh and Cary. The eco-friendly eatery satisfies culinary cravings conscientiously, with MSG-free meats and green-minded practices.

Inspired by their physically and socially active California origins, the pies at zpizza start out with an entirely organic, whole-wheat flour base, hand-thrown and fire-baked until crisp. Zpizza creations include the Napoli (basted with homemade roasted-garlic sauce, mozzarella, tomato slices, parmesan, and fresh basil), Greek (feta, red onions, firm kalamata olives, tomatoes, oregano, and mozzarella), and Thai (splashed with peanut sauce and dressed with mozzarella, spicy chicken, red onions, cilantro, carrots, crisp bean sprouts, and Serrano chilies). Specialty pizza creations start at $10 for 10", $17 for 14", and $20 for 18". Classic consumers can opt for the standard cheese ($16.50 for 18") or pepperoni ($18.50 for 18"), or create their own pie. Z's menu includes salads ($8.50), calzones ($7), and pasta dishes ($7.50). Chocolate-chip cookies ($1.50), along with a rotating selection of Ben & Jerry's ice cream ($4.49 pint), round out the sweet side.

With organic sauce and flour, as well as gluten-free and vegan options, zpizza's pies contain about half the calories and fat of normal pizza. Eight pizzas and four featured salads can be altered to accommodate vegan diners. From fresh-baked crusts to crisp, exotic produce (cremini and shiitake mushrooms, roasted eggplant, truffle oil, pine nuts), the good-for-you grub is a fit alternative to traditional recipes. Choose to redeem your Groupon at either the Raleigh or Cary location for dine-in or carryout only. Zpizza is open daily for lunch and dinner at both locations, with extended hours until 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Call ahead and mention your Groupon before going.

Citysearchers give zpizza 4.5 stars, and nearly 75% of Urbanspooners like it. Reviewers say that although wait times can be long, the creative, fresh pizzas are worth it:

  • I have found my all time favorite treat at zpizza! The pear and gorgonzola rustica is just amazing!... My kids love eating there too, and always ask to go. I feel great about letting my kids eat zpizza since it is healthier than other pizza chains, significantly healthier. – teeder, Citysearch
  • Love this place - I'm usually a basic pepperoni eater, but everything I've gotten here has been really good, the Santa Fe is an unbelievable work of pizza. Service has been right on every time, and they have a great casual atmosphere. – VelvetKarl, Citysearch

Z Pizza Tap Room

In addition to self-pour taps with 20 craft beers and a cider wall, Z Pizza Tap Room is known for its inventive, California-style pizzas: think zesty Thai-style chicken pizza with peanut sauce and cilantro, or Mexican-style pizza loaded with taco fixings. Voted best pizza in Raleigh by CitySearch and Best Pizza in Cary by WakeCary Magazine, even a simple cheese or pepperoni pizza from Z Pizza is sure to be memorable. That's because the restaurant's cooks use only top-shelf ingredients in their brick-oven-baked craft pies, from the Montana winter wheat that goes into their hand-thrown crusts to the organic tomato sauce and Wisconsin skim mozzarella layered on top. Diners can customize pizzas with other toppings, including locally sourced meats, fresh produce, and gourmet ingredients such as truffle oil.

Customer Reviews

The food was very good
Latoya B. · December 30, 2016
I didn't catch the owner's name, but she was very helpful, attentive and pleasant to speak with. My husband and I loved the Mexican Pizza and my 3 year old enjoyed her DIY kid's pizza, which is such a great idea for children. We also liked the serve yourself craft cider and beer selection. We will definitely come back the next time we head up to Raleigh and will recommend to friends and coworkers.

The pizza was great. We really enjoyed the variety. While they had TVs on, it was not loud or distracting.
