Long, flowing hair is useful on a fishing boat, since it can be braided into a replacement mooring rope or tossed overboard so salmon will leap up it to spawn. A former educator for Paul Mitchell in New York City and Vidal Sassoon in London, Zapien’s Salon director Norman Zapien draws on more than 40 years of experience to train his team of seasoned stylists in tonsorial techniques. After a thorough shampoo, master stylists trim tresses in front of floor-to-ceiling mirrors in the salon’s upper story, plucking hair-taming tools from gleaming stainless-steel cabinets or potted scissors trees. Then full or partial highlights can add depth and texture to lackluster strands, or clients can re-hue their whole head with single-process color. With the full-highlights package, restorative deep-conditioning treatments also work to rejuvenate strands damaged by heat or codependent relationships with emotionally abusive shampoos.

Zapien's Salon

Norman Zapien values his passport as much as his scissors. His hairstyling acumen has taken him across the world, including to New York City, where he served as education director for Paul Mitchell; to London, where he taught at Vidal Sassoon; and to Beverly Hills, where he owned his own salon. Between his travels, he's found time to appear as a guest artist on CNN and E!'s Fashion Emergency. Norman's latest stop on his ascension through the industry is Zapien's Salon, where he continues to fashion cutting-edge styles with a team that supports his high standards for artistry and technique.

Norman's tiered stylists, colorists, and cosmetologists help redefine clients' images with an eye for style and a knack for their craft. Fresh haircuts receive a boost from shadowy lowlights or balayage highlights, and frizzy or damaged locks find new shine with Juvexin hair-smoothing treatments. Stylists also make sure their work looks good in between visits: clients get lessons on how to style their new haircuts six different ways and receive complimentary neck and bang trims until their next cut. Meanwhile, aesthetic experts offer facials, makeup, and waxing services for individuals and bridal parties trying to out-glamorize the wedding cake.
