The first evidence of the sandwich dates back to the Italian Renaissance, when painters created multi-paneled frescos that detailed the 57 steps required to place meat between two slices of bread. Zenwich is known for dishing out tasty sandwiches to conquer rumbling stomachs. Hit up the menu for specialty sandwiches such as the crab cake with baby greens and lavishful garlic sauce ($7.50) or the chicken curry, its titular poultry slow cooked in Japanese curry gravy with potatoes, carrots, and onions ($7.25). Each lunchtower comes pinned between ciabatta with homemade, house-seasoned chips on the side, plus coleslaw and a pickle. Vegetarian sandwiches get the same treatment, but come with cucumber salad instead of coleslaw. Pick up a bibimbob, sautéed spinach and shitake mushrooms with shredded carrots and sprouts ($7), or the veggie torta with avocado, refried beans, and pico de gallo on a French roll ($7). Zenwich also sports conventional sandwiches like the BLT ($5.25) and ham and cheese ($5.25), as well as a handful of salads like the soba noodle with watercress and seaweed ($5).
Though Zenwich’s dining space may be small, the staff likes it because it allows them to deliver the fresh creations while they're still fresh. The sandwiches like it too, since they only have to travel a few steps to the plate of their preferred dinner, who they choose after an elaborate vetting process involving social security numbers and pi.
