Ninety-minute classes train students to perform basic parkour movements, enhance their situational awareness, and strengthen their whole body with a conditioning workout. ZombieFit camps convene on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 6 a.m. Upcoming sessions will run July 8–August 2 and August 5–August 30. and are limited to 30 participants each.
If the zombie apocalypse dawned tomorrow, ZombieFit founder Rich Gatz concedes that no one would be truly prepared—but he’d be way more prepared than everyone else. “You don’t have to be the fastest,” says the former Division I collegiate athlete. “You just have to be faster than the other guy.”
Until the dead stagger down Michigan Avenue, you can find Mr. Gatz training. He grounds his ZombieFit workouts in parkour, a discipline that consists of full-body movements such as running, jumping, and vaulting over objects, usually in an urban environment. From these exercises, he has honed in on three tenets for surviving the zombie armageddon: lift and throw heavy things, run fast and for long distances, and efficiently navigate obstacles in an urban environment.
To achieve these goals, students won’t rely on bars or weights. Instead, they’ll scale low walls and practice precision jumps. Though such exercises are simple, they require a great deal of core strength and concentration. “People come for the zombies,” says Mr. Gatz. “But they stay for the fitness.”
In addition to the physical benefits of his workout, Mr. Gatz is quick to emphasize the psychological benefits. As students see their agility and strength increase, they may start to feel confidence in other aspects of life. Mr. Gatz hopes his workouts will enable participants to survive what he calls the daily apocalypse while fortifying their defenses for the zombie one.
