Exercise is a pleasurable activity for both would-be athletes and recovering pyromaniacs desperate enough to settle for burning calories. Fuel fitness regimens with today’s Groupon: for $30, you get a 10-class punch card for Zumba Fitness at ZPower Fitness in Town and Country (a $60 value).
Inside ZPower Fitness's brand-new 2,200-square-foot studio, one of nine enthusiastic Zumba Fitness instructors perches atop a stage, demonstrating torso twists and shoulder shimmies synced to a high-energy Latin beat. The 25 classes held each week fine-tune muscle motors with variations including Zumba Toning, which combines muscle-sculpting exercises with fast-paced cardio to burn calories like a jet engine burns lemonade. Maraca-like toning sticks target abs and arms as hips undulate to the salsa, merengue, and reggaeton pulsing from the crisp, clear sound system. Huge ceiling fans cool down perspiring physiques in both the toning class and the Zumba Gold class, which is tailored to beginners, active older adults, and androids still struggling to master the human concept of rhythm.
Though they are all licensed to lead group workouts, the instructors at ZPower Fitness feel more like party hosts. That's because their Zumba classes evoke the club rather then the gym—they combine modern, energetic music with dance moves that anyone can learn. Guests shimmy along to the beat during regular Zumba classes and incorporate maraca-like hand-weights into the choreography during Zumba Toning classes. For those who aren't in the dancing mood, the teachers offer R.I.P.P.E.D. classes that focus on building muscle. Owner Emily Cook-Willis, a certified personal trainer, can also schedule one-on-one sessions that target specific goals.
