Framed Mark Rothko No. 13 (1951) Print
Upon contemplation of his contemporaries, abstract painter Mark Rothko concluded, “It is a widely accepted notion among painters that it does not matter what one paints as long is it is well painted … There is no such thing as good painting about nothing.” A precocious student who’d dabbled with sketching at Yale, Rothko wandered into an art class to meet a friend and was so impressed that he enrolled in art school himself. Though the Russian-born artist paid great attention to such formal elements as color, shape, and composition, he refused to define his work by these alone.
This print highlights the iconic color-blocked works he painted between 1949 and 1967. It’s printed with vibrant colorfast inks upon heavy paper and placed in a 2” black moulding frame with white matting, which protects the print with durable plexiglass and the ghost of an art-museum curator.
