Hydrangea Root Stocks

The Look
  • Flowering shrub
  • Globe-like heads composed of tiny flower clusters
  • Soil pH can affect flowers’ exact color; hues may vary in your yard
Planting Instructions
  • Dig a 1’x1’ hole
  • Place root stock in hole
  • Fill halfway with soil, then add water
  • When water is absorbed, fill hole with the remaining soil
Care Instructions
  • Water regularly
  • Fertilizer may be required
  • Prune after flowers fade
  • Mulch in the winter to help shrubs survive the season
Good to Know
  • 2-year-old root stocks arrive 12–18” tall, not as a fully grown and foliated potted plant. They are very easy to grow but do require a bit of patience.
  • Growth and flowering process will vary depending on local growing conditions
  • The first year is all about getting the plant established and developing its root system, but some may bloom
  • The following summer will bring many blooms with re-blooming in the summer months
  • Mature height: 4–6’; Annabelle varietal may grow 8–10’
  • Blossoms in late spring or early summer into fall
  • Perennial plant
  • Planting zones:
    • Peegee: 3–9
    • Nikko Blue: 5–9
    • Annabelle: 4–6

They look dead when they come, but if you soak them and plant them, they do sprout eventually. It will probably take a few years to actually get it to produce flowers.

I followed the instructions. I even researched online when they didn't seem to be thriving. One of the three actually survived to produce any leaves. What a waste of money. I should have waited a few weeks and bought one from the local nursery or home improvement store...

I ordered six and planted them all immediately. When the temperature dropped below 60 degrees, I brought them indoors overnight. It's been over a month, and not even a hint of a bud. Don't waste you money.

The dried up sticks I received are still that. I have hoped they would survive, but they have not.

I am so disappointed...I bought 3 peegee, 3 Annabelle and 3 Alice (from a different seller). I had the holes already prepared prior to delivery, followed the instructions exactly and planted the roots the day they arrived (4/4/17). There has been absolutely no growth on the Peegee and Annabelle hydrangeas (however the Alice still available on groupon have green leaf buds). I would like my money back or replacements.
