The Stuhrling name is mentioned in the first few sentences of anyone who recounts the folklore surrounding the Swiss watchmaking legend. It was the 1800s and Switzerland was experiencing a renaissance of master watchmakers all mired in intense competition. Word spread of a passionate horologist—one who studies the art and science of measuring time—who handcrafted timepieces with obsessive precision. The legend of Max Stuhrling spread from his obscure village in the Vallee de Joux, and soon his watches were in such high demand by European royalty and A-list court jesters that Sturhling himself couldn’t afford the very pieces he produced. Stuhrling seethed every time he saw one of his watches on the wrist of an aristocrat, and dreamed of a day when commoners and fellow working-class artists could afford to wear his watches. He wouldn’t outlive his dream, and by the mid-20th century the Stuhrling name was all but forgotten.
That is until 1999. For 30 years, Max Stuhrling IV burned with the passion and tradition he’d inherited from his great grandfather. Rekindling his predecessor’s dream, Max IV founded Stuhrling Original, adhering to a tradition of “excellence and technological prowess” while accomplishing what Max I never could: delivering these to a broader audience. Today, the Stuhrling name is synonymous with the commitment to the master watch-making tradition. Each artisan timepiece is crafted with strict Swiss supervision, precision engineering, fine detailing, and a disregard for fleeting fads.
