The Book of Negroes

This six-episode miniseries, based on the novel Someone Knows My Name by Canadian Lawrence Hill, follows the harrowing journey of Aminata Diallo, who’s abducted from her West African village in 1761 and sold into slavery in South Carolina, at the age of 11. She eventually makes her way to New York amid the Revolutionary War, where she takes on a heroic role aiding other captured slaves, and then moves on to Canada in a struggle to find passage across the ocean back home.

The Cast
  • Aunjanue Ellis, who has extensive experience in film, TV, and theater, stars as Aminata.
  • Cuba Gooding Jr. was lauded for his portrayal of Samuel Fraunces, a character based on the real-life founder of the historic Fraunces Tavern in New York City.
Reviews
  • “Although history obviously mixes with fiction, there’s enough here left under-covered by traditional textbooks to make The Book of Negroes an intriguing window into the period.” – Brian Lowry, Variety
  • “It’s Ellis’ gripping performance that holds the six-part miniseries together. Except for the first installment that focuses on Aminata’s girlhood, Ellis is present in nearly every scene, aging decades and displaying a stunning range of emotion.” – Whitney Matheson, the Hollywood Reporter
