Bee Documentaries

This duo of bee documentaries shines a spotlight on a mysterious and potentially devastating phenomenon: bees are getting sick and vanishing from their hives. The origins of colony collapse disorder (or CCD) are unknown, so Vanishing of the Bees gets expert insights from scientists and commercial beekeepers into its possible causes. Along the way, the documentary illumines the myriad ways humans depend on bees for their own survival in a manner the Daily Mail calls “poignant.”

Bee People takes a more solution-based approach, with a cadre of beekeepers encouraging individuals to increase urban bee populations by starting hives of their own. In addition to covering CCD’s unknown causes, the documentary “effectively plays as a sort of call to action for viewers,” writes The Villager Newspaper, and profiles beekeepers’ personalities and passions.
