Last spring, Crusher Race tested runners on more than just their ability to run. The event’s three separate races—a 5K course, a 10K course, and a 10K+ course—contained a fair amount of running paths, but also a slew of natural and man-made obstacles that test runners’ strength, endurance, and ability to bake mud pies that hold their shape. Crusher Race Winter combines the best obstacles of the spring courses while adding winter-themed touches to each test. Participants run, jump, crawl, and climb through at least 15 obstacles scattered across the 5K course. The end of the course features a toasty fire and warm beverage station. Athletes exit the event full of mud, sweat, and sweet swag.
CrossFit Valley Park's instructors combine lifting, gymnastics, and resistance training to achieve full-body fitness. They implement a variety of tools, such as rowing machines, kettlebells, and medicine balls, and mix up routines daily. Changing exercises keeps boredom away, and the array of motions used preps participants for all physical endeavors. It's a system that can easily be scaled to each member's fitness level, as well. Before starting courses, instructors conduct comprehensive introduction processes that include a beginners' class and an evaluation of clients' current condition and movement limitations. They also keep classes small to ensure everyone receives detailed instructions and personal attention.
At Z Total Body, trainers lead energizing and up-tempo workouts that help clients burn calories, lose weight, and sleep easy at night. You can't run from your problems. But if you're fast enough, you can run from zombies. That's the idea behind Zombie Fright Run, a 5K that pits runners against the brain-hungry undead on the grounds of Six Flags Great Adventure. As some participants in running gear sprint past roller coasters and around swings, others in full zombie makeup lurch after them, attempting to grab flags from their belts. After the race, participants can spend the rest of the day in the amusement park or boogieing with fellow racers at the after-party.
It's common knowledge that Santa can be in a lot of places at once—the North Pole, a local shopping mall, halfway down your chimney taking a nap. But Saint Nick pulls off an even more spectacular feat in Webster Groves each Christmas season, when an army of Claus fans, decked out in their best reds and whites, takes to the streets for the Santas on the Loose 5K Run. Kids join the holiday fun during a 100-yard dash, and everyone gets the chance to mingle with Mr. and Mrs. Claus at the race's after-party.
