  • Lucky Dash Royal Oak
A long-standing tradition in Royal Oak, the Lucky Dash 5k brings together hundreds of runners and volunteers as they jog for local non-profits in the fresh spring air. Participants speed through a 3.1-mile course along Washington Avenue, choosing their speed and walking, running, or rolling. In a fitting gesture for the St. Patrick's Day season, proceeds of the Dash go towards the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the largest Irish-Catholic social organization in America, and the source of donations to many nonprofits and charities.

  • MetaBody Detroit
The inspiring trainers at MetaBody lead troops of workouteers in results-oriented workouts several times weekly. Sweat sessions utilize a variety of exercises and disciplines to produce full-body results in a supportive environment, ideal for beginners and hard-core core-hardeners alike. During any class, motivational instructors will use the instinctual distrust of routine to their advantage. Begin a day of litigating with a refreshing early-morning boot-camp session, or wind down by burning evidence and pounds with a late-evening yoga class. Muscles are kept guessing with new and challenging moves during each session, so participants never fall into a boring, ineffective routine, such as regular teeth brushing. In addition to the fitness classes, students receive a success guide to help prepare for imminent pound loss, a nutrition guide, and a $100 gift certificate for individual coaching. Because the pass sets a 10-class cap at any given location, roving fitness mavens can further shake up their workout regimens by vetting a series of classes or instructors that work best for them.

  • Gut Check 5k
When the starting gun sounds for the ColorFoam5k, participants zoom off toward the finish line. But they'll encounter some interesting checkpoints?colorful ones?along the way. At various points, runners plow through walls of eco-friendly foamy suds and jets of liquid color sprayed from the sidelines. The goal here isn't to set any land-speed records, as the race is untimed, which puts the emphasis on having maximum fun and community rather than on competing. But there is another greater purpose to the event: a portion of proceeds benefit local charities.

  • The Pirate Run
On August 17, Kensington Metropark will play host to a horde of salty dogs competing in The Pirate Run. A nautically-themed obstacle course, the event invites competitors to don kerchiefs, corsets, and eye patches and compete under the banner of the Jolly Roger. The race features five kilometers of pirate-worthy challenges such as the Abandon Ship wall-climb, the frisbee-focused Gold Doubloon Toss, and the Defeat Jack Sparrow pirate shooting gallery, where they can take down buccaneers and ne'er-do-wells with tennis balls and Victorian insults. And the obligatory plank-walking obstacle adds a few twists to the classic scenario by requiring the cooperation of teammates, or at least a recently conscripted crew, to overcome it. At the finish line, organizers hand out best-dressed prizes to pirates and wenches, as well as an award for most creative team name. Awards are doled out at the after party, which features live music, a Talk Like a Pirate Contest, and beverages over which runners can recount the harrowing tales of their race.

  • Superfly Running Inc
Nothing makes a kid feel stronger than putting on a cape and pretending to be a superhero for a few hours. The Super Run gives kids and adults alike the opportunity to find that strength inside themselves without being bitten by a mutated spider. Instead, they do it by organizing superhero-themed 1K and 5K races to raise money for other nonprofits. At these races, runners dress up in their best superhero garb and fly to the finish line where games and entertainment await. Ahead of time, the Super Run picks a site, manages volunteers, and prepares the logistics to put on the events. In the past, they've held races that benefit a variety of groups including the American Association for Cancer Research, Savvy Cyber Kids, and Children's Hospital of Michigan.
