Q&A with Christine Sharbaugh, Owner
As the old adage says, "Stuff happens." What training do you and your staff have to stay ahead of the unexpected?
We have five fly fishing guides available for the entire season with a wide range of availability for clients wanting to go out and learn to fish. Our guide staff is unique because along with the "traditional" male guide, we have a woman on our staff along with a middle school teacher who is popular among kids of all ages.
All of our guides are CPR and First Aid certified.
We are also a full-service fly fishing shop stocked with all of the necessities anglers need to have a productive day on the water.
What is the one feature of your business that you're most proud of?
We are the oldest Orvis fly fishing dealership in the United States, and that is a difficult feat due to massive competition in retail from the "Big Box" stores and the Internet.
What is the experience customers can expect, and how do you make it special?
We custom-tailor our service to the customer:
whether they are a new to the sport, are going on a special trip, or are old-timers who like to socialize and share fish stories, we assist everyone according to their needs and desires.
We also have all tiers of merchandise, from the least expensive to the big dollar items.
In short, no matter what your experience-level, budget or plans, we are here to make your experience a good one.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
We are not just a fly shop - we are located in a beautiful 19th Century Victorian home on 3 acres of manicured land with a trout stream running through the property.
We also have an on-site BYOB restaurant and cafe, slated to open in June 2016.
On the first page the question was asked about whether reservations are required.
I want to clarify that appointments are only necessary for the Groupon and/or when people wish to hire a guide or have a fly fishing lesson.
We have regular business hours for people who wish to chat & shop.
Visitors could explore Tyler Arboretum for hours and still not see everything it has to offer. For one thing, it's huge—the arboretum covers 650 acres of woodlands and gardens crisscrossed with 17 miles of hiking trails. For another, it's constantly hosting educational programs and special events. Through September 30th, 2016, guests can see Tyler's visiting goats, part of a sustainable meadow-management initiative. And then there's the seasonal variation: the exhibits here—not to mention the flora and fauna—change by the month, week, and day. While Tyler Arboretum is open year-round, some of the most alluring times to visit are in the summer—when the vibrant seasonal flowers are in full bloom—and in fall, when the autumn foliage transforms into fiery red, orange, and yellow hues.
Some of the arboretum's most colorful exhibits include a small pond, a 1,400-square-foot butterfly house, and seven interactive tree houses (open April–November) scattered across the property. Tyler Arboretum is open year-round, but some of the best times to visit are in spring and summer, when flowers are in bloom and there are no snowmen around demanding top hats and scarves.
Here at the Colonial Pennsylvania Plantation, the farm and behavior of its workers are straight from the mid to late 1700s, immersing visitors in a living-history book focused on Pennsylvania's past and the United States' earliest days. A tour of the grounds reveals an old farmhouse, a blacksmith, and many animals, including cows, sheep, and horses. Each year might bring new residents—such as young lambs—as well as fresh crops from
flax to buckwheat.
Period costumes help workers keep up an atmosphere of authenticity, as does the plantation's lack of heated buildings, which means the whole operation shuts down during cold winter months. When the weather's not chilly, the plantation also hosts educational programs with hands-on activities that let children and adults experience life on a farm from the 1700s.
