  • American Hot Shots Extreme Run
The American Hot Shots Extreme Run puts the average 5K to shame. Held on a 10,000 acre ranch, the course stretches more than 10 miles, and it challenges racers with 24 obstacles sprinkled across muddy terrain. Luckily, conquering the rope climbs, monkey bars, and other challenges brings ample rewards. Beyond the finish line waits a celebration complete with food vendors, wine, and beer from two of California's best breweries. Live bands also play to set the mood and help drum up support for a good cause. All profits from the event go to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and Wildland Firefighter Foundation, organizations that benefit the families of firefighters killed or injured while serving.

  • Run or Dye
Run or Dye is making race running a little more colorful, one major city at a time. This 5K is divided up into four separate courses of varying lengths, each designated by a separate color?which also reflects the color of safe, eco-friendly powered dye the participants get splashed with. At the end of the race, they'll cross into the aptly named Dye Zone?a polychromatic free-for-all where fluorescent color is thrown freely from all sides, allowing runners to splash their fellow runners or get colorful revenge on their friends, family members, and any cranky art-history teachers that happen to be walking by. Unlike some races that rank runners by time, Run or Dye only measures success in color and fun. While the safe-to-eat dyes should wash out of clothing, runners are encouraged to wear things they don't mind getting dirty, preferably in white, gray, or another neutral color to give the dyes maximum visibility.

  • Wicked WIne Run - Santa Barbara
It's a Run because of the 5K track, a Wine Run because of the celebratory toast at the end, and a Wicked Wine Run because those two ingredients are a recipe for mischief. Participants are encouraged to get in touch with their inner goof, dress up in wacky costumes, and run in teams with the funniest themes they can think of.

  • Conejo Valley Halloween Mud Run
Ghouls, goblins, angels, and bumblebee's trample through the friendly filth at the Conejo Valley Halloween Mud Run. Racers sweat in running spandex or costumes as they complete either a 5K or 10K course complete with hay bales to hurdle, walls to climb, and mud pits to throw incriminating evidence into. The prospect of warm showers greets racers as they finish, along with food vendors, exhibitors, and live music. Racers power through the muck in groups of 75–100 fellow crazies, each affixed with an electronic chip for accurate race timing.
