The family-friendly ByronFest is held every July to showcase the best that the Northern Illinois town has to offer. It also serves as an excellent opportunity for fundraising partnerships: over the past 29 years, the festival has helped local charities raise more than $700,000. Take a look at what there is to do:
Classic events: A midway populated by flashing carnival rides thrills adults and kids alike; Taste of ByronFest lets visitors dig into everything from classic carnival food to Greek and Chinese food; and live gospel, country, and rock has feet tapping throughout the weekend.
Work up a sweat: The festival also promotes healthy activities through a 5K run in the Byron Forest Preserve, a 1-mile fun run, and a timed fitness challenge that comprises eight obstacles. A cornhole tournament, meanwhile, puts area sharp-tossers to the test.
Sights around town: The Byron Museum of History hosts a quilt show that awards ribbons to the best pieces in a variety of divisions. Prizes also await best-in-category vintage vehicles at the car show.

Schnitzel. Hefeweizen beer. Polka dancing. These are just a few of the facets of German culture that the German Society of Rockford has preserved and celebrated since 1964. At the group's annual German Society Oktoberfest gatherings, live bands perform and crowds take part in games such as the barmaid-stein race, which challenges men and women to carry dozens of sloshing beer steins without spilling a drop. The German Society of Rockford also organizes outreach programs, scholarships, and educational events.
