Five Things to Know About the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco
Since its founding in 1877, the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco has served as a focal point for the Bay Area’s diverse Jewish population, with classes, cultural events, and fitness programs open to all. Here are a few things to know about the West Coast’s oldest Jewish center:
It’s a cultural nerve center. There’s always something going on at the JCCSF. The center regularly hosts lectures and performances from scholars, musicians, writers, and comedians, as well as eye-opening art exhibits and installations.
It’s a great place to learn. With three preschools and K-5 enrichment programs for kids, plus dance, art, and DIY classes for adults, the JCCSF helps students of all ages learn new skills and crafts.
It’s a great place to get healthy. In addition to its numerous cultural activities, the JCCSF is home to a four-floor, 45,000 square-foot fitness center. Members can take advantage of over 200 drop-in fitness classes a week, a 25-yard lap pool, basketball gym, and a full-service spa and sauna.
They’re always giving back to the community. Whether it’s through language classes for recent immigrants, resources for interfaith families, or charity drives with its Repair the World program, JCCSF members are hard at work making their city a better place.

While students at Temple of Poi, , a school of movement and flow arts, perfect their fire-wielding skills, they also focus on channeling balance and harmony within themselves. Classes are designed to not only to help students develop techniques, but to also help them rejuvenate through performance and meditation and improve mind awareness, discipline, and self-empowerment. To keep these experiences safe, the staff stresses fire safety, and only encourages those who feel ready to dance with flames to do so. And those who are not yet ready can join the skilled dancers and perform at festivals and special events.
With students ranging in age from 9 to 82, crackling hot flames whizz by as dancers twirl their ropes of fire in mesmerizing circles. For these dancers, fire is a form of self-expression. They set hula-hoops and staffs afire, and perform duets with the fans of flames. Though they make it look effortless, these masters of the art were once novices, who learned their techniques at Temple of Poi.
Temple of Poi’s instructors teach fire-dancing classes with several props. In beginner and intermediate poi classes, students set fire to balls suspended from a handle, which create brilliant circles of flames when swung. Hula-hoop and staff classes also allow students to create a dazzling show with props doused in seemingly everlasting flames.
For more than two decades, the husband-and-wife team behind Jane’s Roses, Flowers and Events has equipped patrons with decorative arrangements for wedding days, formal occasions, and everyday happenings. The two weave together elegant blooms with complementary leaves, ferns, and wispy foliage, crafting beautiful bouquets and artfully filled vases for loved ones. They also design custom arrangements for special occasions, bedecking halls with freshly plucked blossoms laid into aisle-lining strands or arranged into stylish centerpieces.
Should flowers not suit someone’s tastes, the shop loads fruit, snacks, and chocolate into homey wicker gift baskets, which can be picked up or delivered straight to recipients’ doors. Each delivery comes with additional add-ons such as mylar balloons, Ferrero Rocher chocolates, and a photo confirmation, which lets senders experience first-hand the surprise, joy, or leftover milk mustaches on recipients’ faces.
To propel students feet-first into the industry, the San Francisco School of Digital Filmmaking has designed a project-based curriculum that combines traditional classroom study with real-world training. The school's one-year program covers the filmmaking process from start to finish, including independent filmmaking in different genres such as fiction, commercials, documentary, and straight-to-Internet shorts of cats completing three-act emotional arcs without ever leaving their boxes. At the end of the project-based program, each student comes away with more than five completed projects that include a 30-second commercial and an 8- to 12-minute thesis film, plus crewing on an additional 25 or more student films. The school also leads shorter programs and workshops designed for the active student, film enthusiast, or veteran filmmaker. Workshops include one-day, two-week, five-week, and three-month filmmaking courses, and a six-month documentary filmmaking program, though few humans can stay awake for a full six month-long movie.
The staff members at Sylvan Learning's numerous study facilities understand that each child learns differently. Therefore, they don’t try to implement a uniform tutoring system; instead, they design custom lesson programs based on the results of standardized testing, diagnostic tools, and one-on-one interviews.
Tutors work with students from kindergarten through grade 12, illuminating topics ranging from basic reading and writing to remembering complex algebraic formulas without having them tattooed on your chest. Many of Sylvan’s instructors work in local schools, so they are intimately familiar with common curricula and understand how to gear lessons toward optimal results. After-school and summer classes can ready high-schoolers for the rigors of the ACT or the SAT, or they can help students to wow college-admissions officers with their superior essay-writing skills.
