Even the most successful entrepreneurs have to start somewhere. For Douglas Weaver, that somewhere was a basement. In 1967, he opened his first salon with a staff of six, performing beauty treatments in a space located below an arcade in East Lansing. Their talents attracted a following, though, allowing Douglas and his team to expand into a proper salon in Okemos after just a few years. Today, the Douglas J Salons empire includes an entire family of Aveda concept salons and schools, with the Okemos studio serving as the flagship location for studios sprinkled throughout Michigan, Illinois, and Tennessee.
Inside the salon, professional stylists and aestheticians perform a diverse selection of treatments using Aveda's naturally derived products. This includes everything from custom cuts and color to makeup applications, as well as spa services like Elemental Nature facials and hot-stone massages.
As a massage therapist and reiki master, Beverly Bates needed a place where she could practice both of her therapeutic pursuits in earnest. So she opened Holistic Butterfly Studio, where today she draws upon all of her skills to ease discomfort and promote balance.
Beverly's integrated holistic massages incorporate a variety of techniques depending on her client's needs; in just one session, she can help lower stress levels, alleviate chronic back pain, or soothe strained muscles. Her other services include energy-balancing reiki sessions and far-infrared sauna treatments that purge the body of toxins and ghostly spirits.

Q&A with Katie, Certified Massage Therapist
Do you agree with the phrase "beauty is on the inside?" Why or why not?
I do. It goes along with the saying, "Don't judge a book its cover." We do it all the time, whether we notice it or not. My best friend almost wasn't my friend at all because I had decided that because she was so beautiful on the outside, there was no way she was beautiful on the inside. As it turns out, she is one of the most caring and loving people I know. There are all kinds of people out there. If we don't take the time to know them, then we have failed not only ourselves, but our future generations.
What's the most common beauty mistake you see people make? What would you recommend they do instead?
It's the fact that some people don't wash their faces or they use regular body soap to do it. Being a massage therapist, I take care of the body and soul. Being a Mary Kay consultant, I take care of skin. The skin on your face is more delicate and has a different reaction to what you use on your body. You need something that is formulated for your face to take care of any problems that you might have.
What is the best reaction you’ve ever gotten from a client?
When they told me that I made them feel human again. It broke my heart that they had experienced so much pain during their recovery and then after. Their doctors couldn't find a way to relieve their pain, but I did. It made my day to see a big smile on their face.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
I love to talk and to get to know new people. So if you come in for a treatment and would like peace and quiet, just let me know before hand. My goal is to help you relieve stress, not to cause more of it.
Massage therapist Bee Queener channels her training at Ann Arbor Institute of Massage Therapy and passion for helping to ease discomfort and pain into custom therapeutic massages. Bon Vitale Naturale massage oil helps Bee's hands to skate smoothly over the skin as they apply targeted pressure on client-chosen areas, untying knots and easing aches in modalities ranging from Swedish massage to myofascial-release therapy. Beyond banishing discomfort from backs during massage sessions, the spa's custom facial massage services—in addition to perfecting the skin—seek to ease tension from the face, neck, and jawline, helping clients to swiftly chew steak without help from mother birds. In keeping with her own personal vegan habits, Bee uses vegan facial products from Lush, carefully chosen to match each client’s unique skinscape.
Bee’s ground-level office employs warm orange tones to elicit feelings of health and vitality. The welcoming atmosphere encourages patrons to express their needs and comfort levels, and in keeping with this philosophy, clients can undress as much or as little as they like, lounging beneath professional draping or keeping on beloved aluminum foil cardigans.
