Nearly every piece at the Modernism Museum Mount Dora blurs the line between sculpture and furniture with a focus on carpentry and the spirit of futurism. Freestanding staircases take the shape of deconstructed palm trees and armchairs made of hammer handles questions the roles of utility and art. Regular exhibits hone in on the work of under-appreciated artists, such as Wharton Esherick, also known as the “Dean of American Craftsmen” even though he's never been seen shutting down a single frat house.
Dedicated to responsible public education and the conservation of endangered and rare animals, the staffers of the Florida International Teaching Zoo tend to a diverse collection of living beings while teaching students to do the same. Amid the rustling feathers of Lady Amherst pheasants and the uncontrollable laughter of spotted hyenas reading the works of Oscar Wilde aloud, the school’s pupils spend days practicing their cage-side manner and stockpiling wildlife know-how through classes and conservation projects around the globe. To round out their tuition, students helm zoo tours for visitors four days a week, practicing their newly minted public-management skills and granting guests a chance to take in the wonders of the natural world in an intimate setting.

Aimee Maurer was always set on sharing her love of art with others. When looming budget cuts dampened her enthusiasm to teach art at a public school, Aimee decided to create her own outlet, and she founded Easel Expressions. Her upbeat classes meet at area restaurants and allow aspiring artists of all ages and skill levels to enjoy the process of creating a masterpiece. Easel Expressions provides all necessary brushes, paints, and supplies, and instructors offer step-by-step guidance as guests paint scenes such as a beach sunset or rain-glazed city streets. At the end of the event, students can take their canvas home and display the finished work.
