  • Viking Dash
Though participants are encouraged to use Viking-like strength during this all-ages 5K fun run, the name is actually in reference to the Western Washington University Vikings. Portions of the proceeds from this race, whose course snakes past the major sculptures on campus, benefit the school's alumni association and track and field team. After the race, runners can enjoy a party with prizes, refreshments, and a complimentary photobooth that accepts only smiles as payment.

  • Wet Coast Events
Smiling faces surround a typical Wet Coast Events finish line, where participants of all ages show off medals awarded for completing one of the organization's signature races. Wet Coast's team has plenty to smile about, as well. With each happy finisher, they advance their goal of promoting healthier lifestyles through walking and running—two activities they try to make as fun as humanly possible. Founded and staffed by enthusiastic runners, Wet Coast Events puts wild and occasionally wacky twists on 5K, 10K, and marathon events held throughout the Fraser Valley. Take, for example, their Zombie Fun Run, during which hordes of undead zombies chase "survivors" down the length of the course. These hired actors provide the kind of motivation a normal trainer would be hard-pressed to deliver, even with the traditional cupcake-on-a-stick method. Another popular race winds through the scenic trails around Flora Lake in Chilliwack, while the ingenious Fraser Valley Beer Mile allows racers to pause for a beer between laps.

  • Vancouver Lego Games
LEGO sets always come with instructions for constructing everything from town halls to entire kingdoms. For the My Own Creation competition at Vancouver Lego Games, however, the instructions must come from within. At the annual event, competitors showcase their original designs, which vie for top-three prizes and the equally coveted Viewer's Choice Award. Geared toward kids and adults alike, Vancouver Lego Games isn't just a place to show off pre-made pieces. During the Ready, Set, Build! competition, participants respond to a theme with their own LEGO model in just one hour, completely ignoring the normal procedure of applying for a LEGO zoning permit. Besides crowning competition winners, Vancouver Lego Games awards the biggest prize—the event's proceeds—to a different charity every year.
