Though you'd never guess it based on its white, soot-free fa?ade, an unassuming bungalow in East Forth Worth has seen fire from every angle. The structure began its life in 1928 as a fire station to protect the area's growing population from faulty toaster ovens, and today it serves as a gallery and workspace for flame-taming potters.
Firehouse Pottery's community-driven studio enables local artists to create new work in classes for all age groups classes and then display their proudest pieces in exhibitions or among a rotating selection of paintings, drawings, and pottery on display.
Resident artists Keith Thomson and Garret Pendergrass create hand-made pottery and other clay artwork under tudor half timbered gables, welcoming audiences and prot?g?s as they enter under a gabled portico held up by thick stucco columns. The intimate space also hosts events, which range from gallery exhibitions and BYOB gatherings to book signings at which only quill pens are allowed.
Founded in 1977, Huntington Learning Center employs a battalion of highly trained tutors who help students succeed both at school and in standardized testing. The academic evaluation, consisting of exams performed in a simulated classroom environment, yields a comprehensive collection of data that tutors use to design a custom learning program and a personalized, in-class obstacle course.
Roland Omene founded FrogTutoring with the belief that the first and most important step to successful tutoring is to find people who aren't just intelligent, but who are able to inspire their charges academically and personally. The certified and background-checked tutors follow three essential principles to help K–12 through college-age students both learn and grow more confident in their studies. First, the tutors follow the student's school curricula to review subjects that might have been missed. Then pairs work a chapter ahead so that tutees can be a step ahead in class and impress friends by predicting the future. Knowledge coaches will also share effective note-taking and organizational skills so that students will continue to learn more, even without a tutor by their side.
Each tutor is either a current student or alumnus of Texas Christian University or another Fort Worth–area university and has a 3.5 GPA or better in their tutoring specialization to better help students baffled by specific core subjects. During summer breaks, math and science camps in subjects such as chemistry and computer programming bolster confidence, fusing personalized tutoring with camaraderie-building group exercises.
Confidence through Training
Regardless of the situation, Defensive Solutions of Texas helps its students react with confidence and self-control. That's because the center's training not only emphasizes skill development, but mental preparedness as well.
Collectively, the center's instructors have more than 30 years of military and law-enforcement experience. The team includes a former Marine Corps pistol instructor and range master, a DEA tactical operations instructor, and several NRA-certified teachers and range-safety officers.
Classes for All Skill Levels
During introductory courses, pupils familiarize themselves with proper firearm care, maintenance, and operation before refining their shooting skills on the range. Instructors present more advanced students with training scenarios to improve their situational awareness and mental conditioning. In addition, Defensive Solutions of Texas offers concealed-handgun license certification courses.

Certified trainers, a flexible schedule, and a focus on safety are at the core of Aim Safe Training Academy, for which range-safety officers oversee the activity at local indoor and outdoor ranges. Eight firearm-safety classes range from the NRA's First Steps Pistol Orientation to Texas Parks & Wildlife's Student Hunter Education course, all of which can be adapted into private lessons as well. And in addition to qualifying students for hunters' certifications, the instructors also prepare them to apply for concealed-handgun licenses thanks to a Texas DPS?approved curriculum.
