What makes your business stand out?
We take a real-world approach to handguns and handgun safety. We share some "war stories" that shed light on real-life expectations.
What inspired you to start or run this business?
A rise in the amount of gun sales and gun violence. We want the right people using handguns confidently for the right reasons.
What is the best reaction you’ve ever gotten from a customer?
A past customer who was terrified of pistols walked out with a new confidence. She contacted me later to get assistance in buying her own pistol and signed up for an intermediate class.
What’s your favorite part about your job?
Teaching good people to defend themselves.

Though you'd never guess it based on its white, soot-free façade, an unassuming bungalow in East Forth Worth has seen fire from every angle. The structure began its life in 1928 as a fire station to protect the area's growing population from faulty toaster ovens, and today it serves as a gallery and workspace for flame-taming potters.
Firehouse Pottery's community-driven studio enables local artists to create new work in classes for all age groups classes and then display their proudest pieces in exhibitions or among a rotating selection of paintings, drawings, and pottery on display.
Resident artists Keith Thomson and Garret Pendergrass create hand-made pottery and other clay artwork under tudor half timbered gables, welcoming audiences and protégés as they enter under a gabled portico held up by thick stucco columns. The intimate space also hosts events, which range from gallery exhibitions and BYOB gatherings to book signings at which only quill pens are allowed.

What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
HeartStart Express was started over 8 years ago out of the desire to provide CPR and First Aid training to the general public.
Customers who were disillusioned by constant price increases, outdated curriculum, red tape and customer service headaches quickly turned to HeartStart Express.
What do you love most about your job?
Our company is based on the belief that learning CPR and First Aid skills is of the utmost importance. Our entire team is committed to meeting those needs. As a result, a high percentage of our business is from repeat customers and referrals.
Confidence through Training
Regardless of the situation, Defensive Solutions of Texas helps its students react with confidence and self-control. That's because the center's training not only emphasizes skill development, but mental preparedness as well.
Collectively, the center's instructors have more than 30 years of military and law-enforcement experience. The team includes a former Marine Corps pistol instructor and range master, a DEA tactical operations instructor, and several NRA-certified teachers and range-safety officers.
Classes for All Skill Levels
During introductory courses, pupils familiarize themselves with proper firearm care, maintenance, and operation before refining their shooting skills on the range. Instructors present more advanced students with training scenarios to improve their situational awareness and mental conditioning. In addition, Defensive Solutions of Texas offers concealed-handgun license certification courses.

Certified trainers, a flexible schedule, and a focus on safety are at the core of Aim Safe Training Academy, for which range-safety officers oversee the activity at local indoor and outdoor ranges. Eight firearm-safety classes range from the NRA's First Steps Pistol Orientation to Texas Parks & Wildlife's Student Hunter Education course, all of which can be adapted into private lessons as well. And in addition to qualifying students for hunters' certifications, the instructors also prepare them to apply for concealed-handgun licenses thanks to a Texas DPS–approved curriculum.
Understanding that each child learns differently, the staff members of Sylvan Learning Center’s numerous study centers design custom lesson programs. Based on the results of standardized testing, diagnostic tools, and one-on-one interviews, the staff works with students to help them firmly grasp basic skills such as reading, writing, math, and how to remember facts without tattooing them to their chests. Programs target students in kindergarten through grade 12 and mold to various learning styles, helping kids feel more comfortable in the classroom. After-school or summer classes can ready high-school students for the rigors of the ACT or the SAT, or wow college admissions officers with their superior writing skills, exemplary test scores, and willingness to arm-wrestle the school mascot.
