During a trip to the Nashville Zoo, guests greet animals who crawl, swim, creep, and fly through a wide range of habitats and displays, including a three-acre savannah and 15,000-square-foot lagoon. Pack a map and board a train to peek at elands, swap tales with zebras, and challenge ostriches to a game of Simon Says. The fun continues indoors as the Unseen New World exhibit enthralls visitors with reptiles, snakes, and bats, and the amphitheater plays host to daily animal shows. Elsewhere throughout the park, kids can scale a 66,000-square-foot jungle gym and emit whoops on the Wild Animal Carousel, burning off excess energy before moving on to meet toucans, cougars, and sasquatches.
Without transcendent classical music, Nashville's top cultural event would be a polka band performing a 58-minute "Yakety Sax" jam session instead of today's Groupon to the Nashville Symphony. For $30, you get one ticket to see Thibaudet Returns at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center. Concerts take place on Thursday, April 1, at 7 p.m. and April 2 and 3 at 8 p.m. All seating is in the $75 orchestra level.
Basics and Beyond is a personal training program with a certified roster of trainers, nutritionists, and rehab specialists headlined by director and fitness expert Dan DeFigio, who has been featured on Dr. Phil. During a personal training session (a $65 value per hour), exercise routines will exorcise soft bodies, resulting in the mass exodus of malicious fat cells to unveil a slimmer, toner soul satchel. Through nutritional analysis, a personal trainer advises clients on which items in their cabinets are their allies, and which items are gateways to higher-caloric meals.
Peek-a-boo Playtown offers lots of active, imaginative play in our child sized “town” which features a house, grocery store, hardware store, school and fire department. Photographers Paul and Sheri Bartoszek have a knack for capturing images at exactly the right moment, whether they’re snapping shots of a newly wedded couple slowly waltzing across the dance floor or shooting film of a musician as his fingers fly up and down a guitar amid thousands of screaming fans. No matter if they’re in the Serendipity Studio or the brand-new downtown Nashville studio, the photographers strive to take pictures worthy of placement among their other works, many of which hang in galleries across the United States and Canada. They then develop prints, which can framed or pinned proudly to clothes, and supply clients with high-resolution digital images.
In addition to snapping their own shots, the shutterbugs teach photography classes. Students learn how to operate point-and-shoot and DSLR cameras and how to get the most out of natural or artificial lighting in various indoor and outdoor locations, such as the square in Murfreesboro or a doghouse.
The creations at BBQ Beach leave palates awash with tropical-inspired flavors such as mango, banana, and pineapple—and that’s just from the drink list. As the blender churns out peach-cobbler coladas and pear margaritas, bartenders serve their infused-craft-bottled-beers with flavors like banana nut and tangerine. To anchor their libations, patrons dive into dishes full of complex combinations, such as the citrus-grilled mahi-mahi served atop a sweet tamale corn cake, crested with a splash of lime and sliced avocado. The menu also includes the Man Overboard burger, a towering swell of beef, pulled pork, hickory bacon, shaved ham, and a fried egg that doubles as a flotation device.
Outside, the patio large flat-screen TVs and comfy couches entice visitors to gather around the bar or fire pit framed with slabs of square stone.
