  • German American Heritage Center
German journalist Joseph Eiboeck called Davenport “the most German city, not only in the State, but in all the Middle West, the center of all German activities in the State.” That makes sense; when the Standard Hotel opened its doors in the 1860s, it played host to many new residents of the town, many of which were German immigrants. Now the historic building is the home of the German American Heritage Center, a non-profit that seeks to keep their cultural heritage alive. Permanent exhibits, such as the multimedia-focused "German Immigrant Experience," paint a picture of life as an immigrant, while temporary exhibits can focus on very specific stories. One such story focuses on German-American Charles Bush, who helped spark the country's love of kaleidoscopes.

  • Ronald Reagan Home
The Ronald Reagan Boyhood Home lets you get a true feel for the 40th president's life as a child. The restored home was originally built in 1891 and was home to Ronald Reagan and his family in the early 1920s. Visitors can take guided tours of the home to see young Reagan’s bedroom and find old the secret hiding place for his pennies. A visitor center contains four rooms of photos and a display of the Reagan presidential timeline, and a gift shop sells memorabilia and T-shirts. Outside, a flower and vegetable garden showcases heritage plants, and check out Bessy, the refurbished Model T Ford that's not unlike the car Reagan's family would have driven.

  • Freeport Art Museum
Since Freeport Art Museum opened in 1975, its collection has ballooned to include nearly 4,000 pieces. The number is apt, since the artifacts – from Hellenistic gold jewelry to 19th-century Italian marble statues – encompass 4,000 years of work from all continents and time periods. The nonprofit museum reserves its remaining gallery space for work by contemporary regional artists, as well as travelling exhibitions. Said space once belonged to a historic elementary school, a lineage that befits the museum's mission to inform visitors about art's global history and future. Through its educational programs, Freeport continues fulfilling that mission with events such as artists talks and classes on subjects such as graffiti art.

  • Ellwood House Museum
Established: 1965 Reservations/Appointments: Required Staff Size: 2–10 people Average Duration of Services: 1–2 hours Parking: Parking lot Most Popular Attraction/Offering: Guided tours Recommended Age Group: All Ages Pro Tip: Wear comfortable shoes. Q&A with the Executive Director What are the museum's origins? The museum has been operating since Mrs. Ellwood donated the mansion and property to the DeKalb Park District; currently, the estate consists of seven historic structures and 10 acres. A guided tour takes 60 to 90 minutes. Guided tours are the only option for seeing the museum. What is one fun, unusual fact about your business? The mansion was built in 1879 from [the] income Isaac Ellwood received from his half ownership in the first barbed-wire manufacturing company. Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover? The 1891 playhouse is a scale model of a Victorian home and once served as a parade float for the builder to showcase his home-building skills. By the late 1800s, it was acquired by the Ellwoods and became a playhouse. Entering the little building is part of the tour, but it is not handicap accessible. There is an 1865 cemetery located just beyond the woods.

  • Midway Village and Museum Center
Established in 1968, Midway Village Museum embodies a sprawling, 137-acre time capsule. Within the museum’s 27 fully functioning, Victorian buildings, exhibits tell the story of Rockford since its incorporation in the early 19th century. Throughout the years, the town has made history as the progenitor of the sock monkey, the launching point for aviator Bert Hassell, and home of the Rockford Peaches—an all-female baseball team fictionalized in the film A League of Their Own, though the real squad neither played in the 1943 championship nor battled a CGI dragon. Other attractions amid the barns, blacksmiths, and general stores include a dollhouse museum and a meticulous archive of Rockford’s long, proud history in the furniture industry.
