  • The Dance Place
Lexington's only Latin-dance studio, The Dance Place makes its spicy steps and traditional ballroom styles fun and accessible for all skill levels. Latin 101 introduces beginners to the energetic, sensual footwork of merengue, salsa, bachata, and cha cha. The Ballroom 101 course, meanwhile, focuses on the basics of the waltz, foxtrot, and the tango. Busting a move you've never busted before?be it a contemporary hip-shimmy, stately waltz, or a well-coordinated move to a nicer part of town, away from that mouthy opossum that keeps opening your mail?is an exhilarating way to get exercise, learn a new skill, and meet new and graceful friends. Classes start the week of January 16.

  • Wine and Canvas
The artists at Wine and Canvas awaken their students? inner Rembrandts and Van Goghs with classes that pair a featured painting with specialty cocktails and wines. The mobile studio?s monthly calendar includes themed classes in which instructors expound on the nuances of painting Parisian street lamps, Japanese flowers, or Venetian cityscapes. The master painters?many of them local artists?provide step-by-step instructions while students mimic each stroke and periodically dip their brushes into glasses filled with crimson cabernet. Each of the studio?s various drink-friendly venues boasts a specialty libation selected to incite creativity or conversations with fellow painters. When the artistic frenzy concludes, students return home with a finished masterpiece large enough to conceal any wall safe or mirror portal.

  • Surfset Fitness
At Surfset Fitness, you can develop the lean, toned body of a surfer without ever leaving dry land. Surfing fitness classes feature full-body exercises performed atop a board and using the same moves you’d employ while catching waves. Students build muscle by paddling with resistance bands and doing pushups on the board, which dips and bends to simulate the motion of the ocean. This helps to activate stabilizing core muscles and assists in the perfection of Frankie Avalon impressions.

As a busy student at the University of Kentucky, Nathan Spitz needed a quick and effective workout that he could squeeze into his demanding schedule of classes. That was how he discovered CrossFit?an innovative fitness program that involves an ever-changing tapestry of high-intensity workouts consisting of functional movements. With three locations in Lexington, a 9,800-square-foot facility on Palumbo Drive, a 7,000-square-foot facility at National and North Ashland Avenues, and the new location at East Vine and Rose Street, CrossFit Maximus boasts onsite massage centers, a childcare center (not available at the National Avenue location), CrossFit classes, ZONE classes, and nutrition classes. During sessions, they draw from the gym?s arsenal of functional strength-training equipment, including free weights, medicine balls, and slack lines.
