  • Rotorzen Helicopters
Rotorzen instills students with the skills and savvy needed to command the open-air cockpit of a powered parachute. Certified instructors nurse knowledge over 60 minutes of pre-flight training, teaching aspiring daredevils how to handle instrumentation and sneak up on cirrus clouds from behind. Students next take to the skies for 30 minutes of turbine-charged cruising as they skim over and sail through the air above the Lansing Municipal Airport. Flight lessons depend upon wind conditions and are offered Friday evenings, Saturday mornings, Saturday evenings, and Sunday mornings. While powered parachutes accommodate only one pilot at a time, individuals can bring along fellow flyers to join in on the acrobatic antics. All flight time can be applied toward FAA sport pilot certification and subsequent opportunities to tickle the moon into sneezing green cheese.

  • Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust
It's safe to say that Frank Lloyd Wright is a household name, partly because he put his name on so many houses. The sites overseen by the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust receive nearly 150,000 visitors a year?tangible proof that the visionary's impact on architecture, design, and culture remains alive and well. To ensure that legacy continues, the Chicago-based nonprofit runs tours at several of Wright's buildings and hosts various educational programs. Home and Studio: Unity Temple. Robie House. The Rookery Light Court remodeling. All classic pieces of Modern architecture, and all designed inside the studio at 951 Chicago Avenue in Oak Park. From 1889 until 1909, Frank Lloyd Wright worked out of this residential space, eventually expanding the home to include a proper studio as demand for his services grew. Now an architectural destination in its own right, the Home and Studio welcomes guests seeking a look into the mind (and working conditions) of America's most famed architect. On tours, trained interpreters guide visitors through the space, sharing anecdotes and insights into Wright's work and home life. Frederick C. Robie House: The crown jewel of Hyde Park's residential architecture, the Frederick C. Robie House was designed by Wright for the up-and-coming industrialist of the same name between 1908 and 1910. Widely hailed as one of the finest examples of the Prairie School of architectural design, the house has earned its share of accolades over the years, including a spot on the very first National Register of Historic Places in 1966. During tour, architectural experts guide groups through each of the house's significant features, from the cantilevered roof and prevalence of horizontal lines to the striking leaded glass windows that give the house its inner light. Tours also cover recent restoration efforts, giving guests an inside look at what it takes to preserve a historic home.

  • Chicago Pizza Tours
Ask an out-of-towner what they want to do when they visit Chicago, and they'll probably tell you they want to chow down on some deep-dish pizza. Chicago Pizza Tours owner and pizza aficionado Jonathan Porter leads parties on treks to some of the Windy City's most celebrated pizzerias with three different pie-themed tours. Guests sample Chicago's signature style with the deep-dish only holiday walking tour, enjoy slices with sides of adult beverages during pizza and cocktails outings, or visit the kitchens of four different restaurants during the original tour. Each outing takes visitors to local favorites across a wide range of styles and cuisines, from the caramelized thick crusts of Pequod's, the stuffed pies of Bacino's, or the Neapolitan-style creations of Spacca Napoli. Recently, Jonathan Porter has teamed up with local writer and tour guide Jonathan Knotek to launch Chicago Prohibition Tours, a romp through some of Chicago's most famous speakeasies still in existence. During the 3.5-hour bus trip through the roaring '20s and beyond, guests can visit the old one-time haunts of gangsters and crooked pols, such as the Green Door Tavern or the Exchequer Restaurant and Pub, all while sipping popular cocktails from almost 100 years ago and communicating only through silent-film title cards.
