  • American Airpower Museum
The American Airpower Museum couldn't have a more appropriate setting. More than six decades ago, its grounds were home to Republic Aviation. Here, a formidable assembly line?nicknamed "the Jug"?churned out more than 9,000 P-47 Thunderbolts, which helped fortify the Air Force during World War II. Today, the American Airpower Museum displays Thunderbolts in honor of the brave pilots that flew them during those crucial years. And just like the dinosaur skeletons in a natural-history museum, these exhibits come to life?during warm months, Thunderbolts often taxi out onto the runway and take off to the delight of the crowd. The skies around American Airpower Museum showcase other prop- and jet-powered aircrafts dating from WWII to the present day. Ground-level exhibits, meanwhile, show off more aircraft and military vehicles, including tanks. The resident pilots even offer ride-alongs in an AT-6 or Waco aircraft. Visitors can also test the controls of a Cessna 310 for themselves inside a custom-built simulator.

  • Vanderbilt Museum
William K. Vanderbilt II enjoyed traveling around the world, but never so much that he got distracted from his true passion: the sea. He collected marine specimens on his journeys?along with other artifacts?to one day display at his Long Island estate. His collection's first 1922 iteration was aptly called Hall of Fishes. But in the almost-century since then, it's expanded into a museum complex that's home not only to marine life, but to other artifacts of modern history. Size: 43 acres of waterfront land; 30,000+ artifacts. Permanent Mainstay: the historic, Spanish Revival-style mansion, whose 24 rooms feature intricate ironwork and antique furnishings. On tours, visitors also take in what elite family life was like in the first half of the 20th century. Eye Catcher: The rolling lawns. The mansion is surrounded by acres of manicured flowers and greenery that looks especially lush in summer. Hidden gem: Animal species Vanderbilt discovered himself. Keep an eye out for them in the museum. Don't Miss: the Planetarium, a modern addition. On its 60-foot dome, visitors can watch recreations of landmark celestial events, such as Orion trying on belts at the space-mall.
