  • Zip Yosemite
Zip Yosemite The designers of Zip Yosemite, Experience Based Learning, focuses on adventure and safety in building their courses, but they also take care to look after the environment. The company uses Professional Ropes Course Association–accredited builders, who anchor single cables to trees using an environmentally-friendly system. Using this system, the company can string seven ziplines up to 1,000 feet long at heights of up to 80 feet through the aromatic canopies of incense cedars and ponderosa pine trees. Guides take visitors darting down these single-cable paths and across three suspension bridges. Then, they rappel toward the forest floor at one of two rappelling stations. As visitors glide through the forest, they can catch glimpses of wildlife as well as the Fresno Dome and other natural rock formations.

  • National Steinbeck Center
What can a single human build with just his words? In the case of John Steinbeck, the answer to that question is an entire museum. Located in the Nobel-Prize-winning author's hometown of Salinas, California, the National Steinbeck Center immortalizes the author's writing with three-dimensional exhibits that show how Steinbeck championed the human spirit. Size: interactive exhibit spaces, rotating galleries, and seven exhibits based on the author's famous and lesser-known works Eye Catcher: Steinbeck's real camper from his travelogue Travels with Charley: In Search of America Don't Miss: personal belongings from the Steinbeck family Crown Jewels: journals and artifacts that inspired East of Eden, The Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men Special Programs: panel discussions with filmmakers and other artists; a weekly book club; a sudden desire to re-write your middle school English paper

  • Seymour Marine Discovery Center
The Joseph M. Long Marine Laboratory has long been at the forefront of marine research. Opened in 1978, the UCSC-affiliated center is set on a bluff overlooking the rich natural laboratory of Monterey Bay, called the “Serengeti of the Sea” for its diversity of marine life. Complementing the laboratory's mission to advance knowledge of the marine environment, the 20,000-square-foot Seymour Marine Discovery Center opened in 2000 to educate the public about the bay and the process of scientific research. Carefully designed to resemble a lab rather than a traditional museum, the center's hands-on exhibits delve into specific research projects while colorfully answering such questions as "what is science?" and "why is science important?" Aquariums and touch tanks facilitate up-close encounters with marine life, and an 87-foot blue whale skeleton—one of the largest in the world—soars majestically outside.
