It opened some 15 years after company owners Todd Carden and Brett Norton established the original location in 1997. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when you visit this popular Lake City destination. The kitchen incorporates beer into the food. Favorites include the cherry-stout-barbecue elk burger, which also features caramelized onions and a house sauce. More than a dozen gourmet burgers anchor the menu. However, you can substitute the Black Angus beef with a number of other healthy options, including house-marinated portabella-mushroom caps, ground turkey, or vegetarian patties. The buns are baked fresh. Not only that, they’re made from spent grain from the company’s breweries. This is just a small example of Elliott Bay’s sustainability efforts. Kids are welcome. Just because the word “brewery” is in the restaurant’s name doesn’t mean tykes are out of luck. In fact, they have their own menu full of pint-size eats. It can get loud at times. Between the music and a seating capacity of 250 guests, this is not the best place to read a book while eating.

    Shochu, a calorically-light grain alcohol popular for hundreds of years in Japan, isn't very well known in the states. Sodo Spirits Distillery aims to change that. The distillery ferments Shochu in small batches, the way it was done in Japan back in the 1600s, with one small exception—Sodo handcrafts their version of "Japanese Moonshine" from local ingredients. Distillers combine pearled Barley from Washington's eastern fields with Koji fungus—the key traditional ingredient—to create the alcohol's signature flavor. Then, they dress up the mixture with field grown herbs and spices, such as fresh spearmint and fresh ginger. With a clear color and smooth finish, it makes an ideal mixer in fruity drinks or the ideal filling for the Hemingway Society's office water cooler.
