  • Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad
In 1880, the final fasteners and sleepers on the Valley Railway were tightened into place. It wouldn’t be long before a billowing cloud of steam announced the arrival of the first train running through the Cuyahoga Valley, a territory that had served as a passageway for foot traffic for thousands of years. Over the next century, the railway contributed to the growth of commerce between Akron and Cleveland, changing ownership multiple times, and transforming from a freight train, into a passenger train, back to a freight train, and finally into a UFO. Now celebrating its 41st year of passenger-rail service, the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad transports sightseers over the historic rails through 33,000 acres of land owned by the National Park Service. With a year-round roster of trips, including wine- and beer-tasting excursions, passengers can set forth on morning, afternoon, and evening journeys that sweep past meadowlands, pinery, and rivers and give glimpses of native wildlife, such as fox, deer, bobcat mascots, and owls.

  • The Fear Experience
Rated one of the top haunted houses in Ohio by Funtober and BloodyDisgusting, The Fear Experience will leave anyone quaking in its gruesome halls. The experience is split across four haunted houses, each filled with Hollywood-quality sets and trained actors whose only goal in life is to frighten you. Wander through the Zombie Uprising where zombies appear around every corner, then creep over to the abandoned mental facility where criminally insane patients have just disposed of their doctors and await fresh victims—you. If that's not enough, the Centralia County Fair and Circus are give your feet reason to bolt with the promise of evil clowns, chainsaws, and a freak show. But The Fear Experience has one more trick: the Buried Alive coffin ride immerses groups in a motion simulator with sounds, scents, and special effects designed to make you feel like you're stuck six feet under.

  • Spooky Ranch
Spooky Ranch corrals five different haunted attractions onto one patch of terrifying farmland. The experience begins in the Haunted Barn, which echoes with strange noises and screams even as visitors pass through to buy their tickets. An enormous skull sits atop the barn, belching clouds of fog and staring balefully at passersby with glowing green eyes. But the skull's frightful gaze is nothing compared to the horrors that await guests beyond the haunted barn. In Crazy Clowns 3D, for example, visitors don a pair of 3D glasses and delved into a psychedelic trip through ultra-bright, horrifyingly realistic imagery. Bloody Mary's Revenge, meanwhile, features Hollywood-quality special effects; in fact, it's a replica of the Halloween attraction created for Universal Studios Orlando. In addition to gore and scares, Bloody Mary's Revenge features actor-operated, hybrid multi-motion animatronics, which, in layman's terms, translates to "people inside scary robots that come after you". While special effects terrify and astound, they're hardly the only impressive scare on the Ranch. The classic Haunted Hayride, for instance, takes visitors through the Forest of Fear, where ghouls lurk in the fog beneath the limbs of 30-foot tall animated creatures who summon pyrotechnic fire. If visitors survive the other attractions, then all that stands between them and the exit is the Funny Fun House. This classic circus attraction has reflection-mutating mirrors, a spinning black hole tunnel, and an upside down room. Once guests have righted themselves, the attraction deposits them at the Halloween gift shop, where they'll have the opportunity to take revenge on the spooks by buying a few and forcing them to sing show tunes on the ride home.
