  • Menchie's Frozen Yogurt
Though he couldn't have known it at the time, Adam Caldwell arranged what arguably could be considered one of the most successful first dates in modern history. He not only ended up marrying his date, Danna, but also had such a memorable time with her in the frozen-yogurt shop that the two of them were eventually inspired to start their own. They opened Menchie's Frozen Yogurt in California in 2007, and within just a few years, found themselves with a family of hundreds of thriving stores sprinkled all around the world. As the Menchie's brand grew, Adam and Danna kept a simple mission in mind: to make their customers smile. An adorable cast of animated characters is featured throughout the stores, including on the colorful spoons, and customers can have fun creating endless frozen-yogurt combinations. There are almost 150 rotating yogurt flavors, and the selection includes eight versions of vanilla. Of course, there are plenty of toppings as well, displayed in help-yourself bins filled with fresh fruit, nuts, cereal, and candy. The yogurt is made from fresh milk from a California dairy, and it is free of the artificial growth hormone rSBT. All the yogurt is kosher, and certain flavors accommodate vegan and gluten-free diets.

  • Delightful Taste
As a child, Guil Fernandes felt the allure of egg beaters and baking pans as much as toy trucks. Fascinated by cooking, the budding chef would trace his mother's footsteps through the kitchen in hopes of catching glimpses of recipes or being asked to lend a hand. Guil's inevitable career as a chef would later include formal training and experience at Senac, Algonquin College, and Le Cordon Bleu. He enjoyed successful stints as a wedding planner and teacher (whose baking classes often sold-out) before recently founding his own sweetshop, Delightful Tastes. The modern, 2,200-square-foot bakery teems with his creations, which range from traditional yellowcakes and buttercreams to more unique batter-based brainchildren, such as raspberry-mousse cake, red velvet cake crowned with chocolate shavings, and single-serving confections that include cake pops and house-made chocolates. Guil insists upon cake purity by banning hydrogenated oils and artificial preservatives from his 100 per cent nut-free bakeshop. Event planners often frequent Delightful Tastes, understandably seduced by the chef's gift for devising elegant one-of-a-kind cakes while performing ventriloquist acts with his pastry bag.

  • Main Street Cellar Wine Bar
Executive Chef Amos Jarbeau and Sous Chef Ian Sunstrum wonder what to serve for tonight's special. Instead of looking in the cooler, they walk across the street to the local butcher and check out the available whole cuts of meat. Afterward, the duo heads toward the street corner, where a Roots and Shoots farm stand displays freshly picked organic produce. It's a typical day for the chefs, who continually tailor Main Street Cellar Wine Bar's menu to what's in season and what's local. To enhance the nuances of the changing dishes, Main Street's four sommeliers—who include owners Paul Paton and Kim Burns—recommend vintages from a continually evolving wine list that spans regions from France to British Columbia. Paton and Burns play upon guests’ senses within a home built in the 1880s, where a varying decor of exposed brick walls, gleaming wood accents, and cushy black leather chairs with tufted backs creates different feels in each room. But Main Street's most popular space is its casual back courtyard, where diners enjoy seclusion from the main road and Ottawa's cutthroat paparazzi.
